WHO, IN FACT, IS DRIVING PUBLIC POLICY IN TEXAS?

The true “marketing” of public policy ideas integrates state-level campaign objectives
to develop, package & deliver effective communications products to advance ideas.

The Texas Citizen Action Network is a coalition of organizations focused on educating citizens & getting them involved in public policy decision-making. By distributing the ideas & research provided by other think tanks & like-minded groups with our list of friends & supporters (often more than 100,000 email addresses strong), our efforts empower Texas activists for engagement at any level of government – regardless of office.

The Texas Citizen Action Network works because we understand the landscape of today’s communications battlefields … better than anyone.

Our alliance of organizations educates Texas citizens & gets them involved in public policy decision-making. By widely distributing the ideas and research provided by other think tanks & like-minded groups with our list of friends & supporters, we galvanize Texans for engagement at any levels of government.

Only when equipped with information can our friends & supporters become leaders who influence elected officials with cost-saving, practical solutions for government. We know what it takes to win & improve the lives of all Texans.

CORE VALUES: Texas Citizen Action Network is committed to the following virtues & beliefs.

Freedom NOT Constraint
o Our most basic, core value, is freedom. We support the right of individuals to choose for themselves how to live and work in the Texas economy.

Individual Choice NOT Group Think
o As President Bush has said, we believe individuals know how best to spend their own money. Accordingly, we support policies that empower individuals, not government organizations or agencies.

Entrepreneurship NOT Corporatism
o We support an entrepreneurial economy that is open to all individuals from all classes. We oppose attempts to close economic life to those without the “proper” governmentally defined credentials.

Solutions NOT Empty Rhetoric
o We believe in offering tangible policy prescriptions that will improve the lives of all Texans.

Policy Analysis NOT Politics
o We are committed to public policy research and advocacy without regard to politics. We cooperate with elected officials irrespective of party affiliation.

Empirical Research NOT Polemics
o Data-driven research and analysis is essential to elevate the policy debate beyond partisan interests.

Cooperation NOT Coercion
o Since voluntary cooperation is the essence of a civil society, public policy should support voluntary solutions to social problems not government mandates or plans.

Long-Term Change NOT Opportunism
o We do not expect immediate results, but work for long-term change from the intellectual, can-do approach most people wake up with every day. We will not trade principles for short-term (political) gain.
